Last Minute Stopover in Bali

A lesson in doing nothing

The cheapest way to get to Vietnam with last minute booking was via Bali, choosing the cheapest day for each leg.  But can we learn to do nothing for a few days…. ?

Staying near the airport and with a free transfer to the hotel via booking.com (do not know how that worked as it has never happened before but will not look a gift horse in the mouth) we are starting off well. Apart from broken Binoculars and a missing power adaptor.

I am not at my most comfortable doing this little but as we get older it is most probably a good lesson to learn how to.

For a busy island where we are staying has a lot of greenery, both in the grounds and walking left towards the airport, it’s a quiet area but with some great eating options around – and shops/stalls if you need them.

Kuta is surprisingly quiet not sure if troubles are stopping people travelling, or just going somewhere else. Not too many loud bogan’s this time.

Day 1 – a morning walk – good to see some different birds and scenery and such a great temperature in the early morning before the heat kicks in. Not allot of different birds but we did get 1 new bird, and also saw a few endangered Java Sparrows which are rare.

A leisurely breakfast, reading and swimming take up the rest of the morning, before taking another walk around the streets and lunch.

More reading, swimming a massage and walking take up the rest of the day.

The next days are similar – without the massage, can’t exactly do that every day.

Hotel housekeeping people are great different animal towel on the bed each day.

Later in the week we meet up with a couple at a Warung on the beach in Sanur for a lovely lunch and afternoon of chat.  Great to catch up with friends from home while away.

A shopping mall nearby here does a free nightly dance show so one evening we go to watch that, love the elaborate costumes. On our last full day lets go for a Thai lunch (food is excellent), picked the wrong day as the mall was full of young video gamers having an excruciatingly noisy championship.

Sunsets have been a wash out the whole week, even on the days where it is sunny thick clouds always come over just before sunset. Still worth a drink on the beach in case though.

PS adaptor found

So have we learned how to do nothing – not really, we managed but did not find it easy to fill our time.  Not like a couple of people in this hotel who seem happy to spend all day, everyday on a lounger by the pool.  I doubt whether I will ever be able to do that, or at least not till a lot older.
